Ex-POW tells Glamour she still gets hate mail June 7, 2007 The Associated Press NEW YORK — Former prisoner of war Jessica Lynch still receives hate mail, four years after her capture and long after publicly disputing the military’s exaggerated accounts of her capture and rescue in Iraq. The former Army private from Palestine, W.Va., was severely injured and 11 other soldiers killed when their convoy was ambushed in Nasiriyah in 2003. Lynch, one of six soldiers captured, was later rescued by American troops from an Iraqi hospital, but the military’s account of the ambush embellished her role to make it sound more heroic. Lynch, who testified before Congress in April, has received some 30,000 letters from people across the country. While most are from supporters, there are plenty of critics. “People say, ‘You didn’t do anything in Iraq.’ Sometimes I think I’m the most hated person in America,” she told Glamour magazine for the July issue appearing on newsstands June 12. “Nobody likes to believe the military would mislead people,” Lynch told the magazine. “But they wanted a war hero so badly that they portrayed me as one. They didn’t get their facts straight before talking about what happened, and neither did the media. They said I went down guns blazing, like Rambo — but I never fired a shot because my rifle had jammed. “They later corrected the story, but I’m still paying the price,” she said. “I loved the military,” she said, “and would probably still be serving if things had gone differently.”
Best Answer:
She was caught between a rock and a hard place. Again, the Bush administration spin machine put a different look on the truth on this situation, as has been with many instances on both war fronts. It is a shame when stories have to be stretched or manufactured to produce heroes when in essence all who serve are heroes anyway. It also reflects upon the character of this White House. Shady, at best.
