You can't prevent them.. stretch marks are just a fact of life.. you may be able to reduce how bad they are by drinking lots of water and keeping your skin moisturized with vitamin E and coco butter. It's important to keep yourself hydrated.

Some say lotion, some have other methods they claim work. But the truth is IF you are going to get them it wont matter WHAT you do. I call mine battle scars and am proud of what I got for them!
Acer214 - 2007-11-14 11:17:32
I used cocoa butter and that really seemed to help.

you cant. if you get them you get them. sometimes they say if your mom had them you are more likely too. but there is no proven method to stop them. there are alot of creams, especially with vitiam e, that will help reduce the apperance, but not actually getting them. sorry.

Cocoa butter is considered the best way to prevent them; however, it will not prevent all of them. Mederma is supposed to help with ones that have shown up already, but check with a doctor to make sure it is safe during pregnancy.

If there was a way to prevent them, no one would have them.

You can't prevent them, its genetic but you can lessen the appearance by using cocoa butter and products with Vitamin E.
Angel Girl - 2007-11-14 11:19:20
i just keep rubbing a stick of coco butter on my stomach and else where
MZ02 - 2007-11-14 11:19:50
you can't prevent them, if you get them, you get them. Sometimes it is genetic, sometimes not. You can use lotions to DECREASE the appearance....but you can not keep them from appearing. My personal experience to shed some light on you......I got them in my 3rd trimester....I was devastated, I cried..they were EVERYWHERE on my belly..I hated it...i was so upset....within 3 mos after I had the baby they went away!!!!! I now only have verrrrrryyy faint light stretchmarks just below my belly button..... I was amazed..maybe I prayed hard enough, I don't know, but I don;t care.. they are gond.. Soo good luck!!

You cant. No matter what anybody says. You cant. There are lotions you can buy, but they wont work. The only way to help prevent them is to not gain any unnecessary weight. By that I mean staying healthy but avoiding overeating as we sometimes do as pregnant women. Stretch marks seem awful but eventually the usually start to fade. And the prize you get in the long run ( your baby) is well worth it. Good luck.

You may not be able to 100% prevent them, but one thing that helps is keeping your belly lotioned up! Find a lotion with vitamin E in it.
Also, make sure your weight gain is within the guidelines your doc gives you. Gaining too much weight too fast will make your belly grow faster, making stretch marks more likely to happen.
I am 33 weeks pregnant, and no stretch marks YET.

ask your mother and grandmother if they had them...if they didn't, you're less likely than getting them.
Rapid weight gain is more likely to bring them on, so try to eat healthy (unlike myself) and not go through the McDonald's drive thru so much!!
Lotions and creams don't help, but they won't hurt anything, so I still do it!!
Drink lots and lots of water, it helps your skin's elasticity.
But unfortunatly, if its in your genetics, more than likely, you'll get them. But as a plus, if you do get them, I think having darker skin will make them less noticable.

Cocoa Butter. Keep your skin, specifically the areas you are concerned about, moisturized with the cocoa butter a few times a day and drink plently of water. Other than that, the rest is genetic.

There is a lotion that you can find in most drug stores its called mothers friend. It has been around for a very long time I used it and you can not tell I was ever pregnant and i feel you want to get started early it will help loosen the skin before the baby does. Congratulations and Happy Holidays

You really can't... it is hereditary, if your mom had it, then odds are you will have too.
My mom never had them (2 kids). I have 2 boys myself and got only a ver small one on my side when I was pregnant with may first at 9 months.
I did put a lot of JJ lotion on my belly.

I was soooo proud when i never had stretchmarks during my whole pregnancy.....
Then...at 7 months, they started around my waist!
What none of those lotion/cream commercials tell you, is that they will never work. Stretchmarks occur in the LOWER level of skin....it doesn't matter how much lotion you put on your body....it will never go down to that inner layer of skin.
On the other hand, there is another problem called PUPPP, which is basically dry, terribly itchy skin. I recommend using a good lotion with NO perfume, such as Eucerin, and slather on lots of it right after you get out of the shower/bathtub. It will help dry, itchy skin.
Sadly, nothing will help stretchmarks. Some are lucky, and never get them very bad. I thought I would be one of those lucky gals, but my worse stretchmarks came around after I was 30 weeks along.

Sometimes people don't get them. Look at you mom, if she has them theres no real way you can prevent them, some say cocoa butter works, my sister tried that and all it didi for her was make her stomach look like a shiny ball. I'm only 5 weeks but I know I will get them. It's all a part of pregnancy.
spinklet - 2007-11-14 11:27:53
WELL WE ALL WISH THERE WAS A MIRACLE CURE...Bt sadly there not LOL

the truth..... you can not prevent them! Some women luck up and do not get any, but the bigger your body gets the more it has to stretch leaving those awful marks. When i was pregnant with my first child i used cocoa butter on my entire body every day, by my 6 month i had stretch marks all over my breast and butt because they both double maybe even tripled in size. My belly got so big and i thought i was home free by my 8th month with no stretch marks but two weeks before i delivered they started showing their ugly little heads. The truth is that the only control that you may have over stretch marks is to not gain an excessive amount of weight and you still may get them on your belly and any other place that you grow. I was a little petite girl before my son and my skin had to stretch and so does yours. It is a battle scar of being a mother so just accept it and be thankful they fade.
Elle3 - 2007-11-14 11:28:42
Lots of lotion helps the itch and feeling of tension. Unfortunatley stretch marks are inherent and if you are going to get them, you'll get them no matter the prevention. I think it's the care of them after that reduces them if you happen to get them.
I thought I would be free of them (my mom was) until last week. As soon as I hit 36 weeks I ended up with a few around the bottom of my belly and breasts.
Use cocoa butter and Vitamin E everywhere to help reduce the lasting effects of them and retain elasticity before and after baby. (Congrats!)

there's no way to prevent them.
i used Palmers stretch mark cream 2-3 times a day from the time i found out i was pregnant, took vitamins, drank a TON of water, actually *lost* weight (doc wasn't worried) and still started to get them by about 22 wks. (except on my breasts--i actually got those around 18 weeks i think)
but the lotion does make them feel better, less itchy.
(if you scratch them they look a lot worse because it causes some bleeding just under the skin in the striations)

Oil of Olay.
Not just on your belly, but also your bottom, thighs, hips breasts. Those are the places most likely to be affected.
Angel - 2007-11-14 11:33:54
I have heard cocoa butter and LOTS of it. Also, I have heard that stretch marks and skin elasticity can be genetic, look bakc @ your mom and grandma and you should see if you will or wont get them.
shawnamike5202006 - 2007-11-14 11:33:59
I heard that stretch marks are hereditary. But you could try Cocoa Butter or Vitamin E lotions.
jen857805 - 2007-11-14 11:38:14
Go and get some Coca Butter they have some made ecspecially for pregnant women and it is really good but you need to go and get it soon because your belly will start to get bigger real soon and youll get stretch marks everywhere. If you dont want to buy that you can also use baby oil it really works good too. I hope this helps and congrats on the baby and i hope everything goes well for you.

Have you husband rub Mother's Friend ointment,or some thing similar, on you every night.
We had three children and not one stretch mark in sight.
kelsey-mommy to be!!! - 2007-11-14 11:54:08
Avoiding them is impossible. Unfortunetly, they are genetic. I have stretch marks that look EXACTLY like my moms.
